The summer heat is once again upon us. These are the days that can put your knowledge of your pool to the test. The transition from winter to summer comes quickly and so does the heat. It is important know the proper run time for your pool equipment. To do this you need to know the size of your pool and the gallons of water it holds. Knowing the size of your pump is also vital to proper run time. It is also important to know that as the air temperature rises, so does the temperature of the water, therefore, the demand for pool chemicals is greater. The proper amount of chemicals to maintain ideal chemistry is highly dependent upon the size of your pool, the type of filter on the system, and the environment surrounding the pool. A basic formula you can follow to determine how many gallons of water your pool contains is:

  • For a rectangular pool: Length x width x avg. depth, multiply
  • For an oval shape pool: Length x width x avg. depth, multiply
  • For a round pool: Length x width x avg. depth, multiplied by 5.9

Now would be the time to check over your equipment. Maintaining your swimming pool will be a whole lot easier and less time consuming if your brushes, nets, poles, and pool cleaner are in good working condition. If your brushes are losing their bristles, your nets have holes in them, or your poles are bent or will not stay in position, do yourself a favor and go down to your local pool store, and purchase some quality maintenance equipment so you can enjoy your pool and not let it be a burden.
Safety is also a top priority when the weather grows warmer. Swimming pools are used much more and a safety plan should always be in place. Going over a few simple rules with the swimmers will make their day and your day more fun.
