Many areas of Southwest Florida are affected by the White Fly. This is an exotic pest that introduced itself by feeding on vegetation such as palm trees and ornamental bushes. The fly kills the vegetation that it feeds on, and then it dies itself. The flies will fill up swimming pools and clog the plumbing. The fly also produces a sugary substance that is sugar based which causes swimming pools to fill with organic matter that needs to be removed with a treatment. The most effective way to treat the swimming pool is to use an enzyme to eliminate the organic matter, and then follow up with a phosphate remover to removed the unbelievably high levels of phosphates which will be left behind by both the fly and the organic matter it produces. Once the pool water has been treated, it may be recommended to replace the pool filters. The enzyme and phosphate treatments are common for many pools, but especially needed to eliminate the white fly.

Along with treatments for white fly, there are many other treatments that the industry recommends for different issues with swimming pools. Some of the saltwater swimming pools that we work with are benefitting from treatment with sequestering agent. Sequestering agent is used to contain the metals that enter the pool water from methods of filling the pool. Whether it be with an autofill system or by manually placing the hose in the pool, the municipal water source may contain many metals which can cause staining–especially in saltwater pools. The metals will precipitate (come out of solution) and bond to the pool finish. They can appear as very unsightly. The sequestering agent works to hold the metals in solution and disallow them from precipitating. The sequestering agent can be added to the pool first by a startup does, and then followed up each week with a small maintenance dose.

These are two ways methods that help to keep residential and commercial swimming pools healthy and deal with the factors that affect them
